In the Cave
Friday 20th May 2016 – Very cavy – have downloaded some games to play and don’t plan to see much sunlight for a few days – ironic seeing as we’re on an island by the beach. A huge cockroach we’ve nicknamed Cocky is living in our bathroom. Alysa hung the mosquito net up tonight so we don’t get bitten again.
Saturday 21st May 2016 – Stayed in the room/cave all day playing games. Alysa has found a good book to read down the beach. Managed to catch Cocky under a plastic box and relocate him to a new home a couple of hundred yards down the beach. Slept in sleeping bag liner – much more comfortable than our towel sized sheet. Full moon party is tonight but no interest in going.
Sunday 22nd May 2016 – No change from Saturday. Achieved mastery over the a/c unit – it now quietly does its job rather than blasting us with cold air periodically like Guantanamo Bay inmates. Rehung mosquito net to give more space inside.
Monday 23rd May 2016 – Put laundry in for washing and played games. Feeling less cavy now. Romantic walk along the beach with Alysa in the evening.
Tuesday 24th May 2016 – Applied for Myanmar visas online, confirmed flights to Yangon and booked accommodation for first night there. At dinner tonight we ate at the same place we had been very happy at the previous five nights. Alysa’s potato was cold and her sweet corn tasted of meat but when we complained (very gently) the staff made out that we were lying. There is a veneer of hospitality towards Westerners on the island but you don’t have to scratch very deep to glimpse the contempt beneath.
